Katel Delia, The Last Breath
The Last Breath is an immersive installation exploring migration across the Mediterranean. It forms part of Katel Delia’s wider body of work tracing histories of migration and displacement through her own family lineage, including the movement of her Maltese family between Malta, Tunisia and Marseille.
Originally commissioned for il-Kamra ta’ Fuq (Malta), the work brings together photography, light and sound to create a shifting sensory environment. Central to the work are photographs made by Delia while diving, capturing the bubbles released by divers underwater. Appearing and disappearing, the bubbles become a recurring presence throughout the installation.
Statistics relating to migration across the Mediterranean sit alongside mapping and sound, bringing the wider context and realities of movement across the sea, including the risks and uncertainties that surround these journeys.

Katel Delia, born in 1975 in France, is deeply attached to her Maltese origins and has been living and working between Malta and Paris since 2016. In 1999 she completed her DNSEP degree at the Beaux-Arts de Rennes. Her diploma project explores "The lack of landmarks in water", and consists of large format digital montages. In 2000, she plunged into the internet bubble as artistic director and then functional project manager. In 2015, she finally decided to exhibit her artistic projects. She creates installations combining photography, sculpture, and writing. Her work focuses on how traces of the past reflect into the present. She is also investigating our perception of space.
