FFOCWS 2023 LINE-UP ANNOUNCED

Following the success of the first edition, we are delighted to announce that Ffocws will be returning later this year! After surveying graduate shows from Higher Education Institutions across the country, we can now announce that ten outstanding projects by graduating students have been selected to be included in a group exhibition, opening on 23 November.

Furthermore, four more artists will be displaying their work alongside the selected graduates as part of the Higgins Photography Initiative, in partnership with Cardiff MADE. They will be supported to develop their career path and practice through a tailored, six-month professional development programme which includes a series of talks, peer critiques and mentoring by professional photographers. Ffocws 2022 Alumni - Ada Marino

We love hearing from our Ffocws Alumni about what they’re up to, and were thrilled to hear that Ada Marino has been selected for Fresh Eyes 2023!

Fresh Eyes celebrates the best photography talent in Europe. It is a guide book presenting the greatest 100 emerging image makers the continent has to offer. Congratulations Ada!

Online artist talk with Fatoumata Diabaté

3 October, 6pm

Learn more about Fatoumata Diabaté’’s practice through this online artist talk on 3 October.

Fatoumata’s exhibition L’homme en objet / en animal et Nimissa - a collaboration between Elysium Gallery and Ffotogallery - opened last week in Swansea and continues until 28 October. This online talk is in French with English subtitles provided.

Feeling at Home (Pop-Up Exhibition)

11 - 21 October

Feeling at Home shows work from 19 photographers with learning disabilities from across Brighton and London. They have been meeting together in small groups to reflect on what helps them feel at home, and what gets in the way of this. The exhibition provides an opportunity for the public to see the world through the eyes of people with learning disabilities, and to reflect on their own responses to this work. Get a sneak peak of the show on 10th October when we’ll be open between 11am - 1pm for our next Tea & Cake Tuesday!

Photovoice Webinar

18 October, 6 - 8pm

Dr Deborah Chinn, lead researcher for the Feeling at Home study, will introduce ‘photovoice’, a participatory research and community development method in which people tell their stories, share their experiences, and work towards improving their lives through photography. This online session will be of interest to artists and photographers who want to use participatory approaches to include community members in their practice, and community groups and individuals who are curious about how they can use participatory photography to bring about social change.

Pictures on Pages

20 October 1 - 4 pm, USW Atrium

This new event on Friday 20 October is a warm-up event for our own Photo Book Fair the following day and seeks to explore more collaboration between photographers, graphic designers and other creatives to stimulate experimentation in realising new photography publications in Wales.

There will also be a panel discussion on the role of photo zines and small books as valuable learning for future relationships with publishers.

We have a range of stallholders lined up, including Nawr Magazine, Offline Journal, Ipigeon, Ffoto Newport, 2tenbooks, USW and more.

Do you want the chance to present your photobook - in whatever stage of creation it's in - to an audience? Sign up for a 5 minute slot at our drop-in 'Photobook Speed Presentation'. We want these photobook speed presentations to be a chance for artists to connect over their work, discover new creatives as audience members, and refine their own ideas.

Pink Portraits Revisited

25 October - 4 November

To coincide with the annual Iris Prize which takes place every October, we’ll be hosting a pop up exhibition featuring Pink Portraits Revisited. Dylan Lewis Thomas photographed the next generation of LGBTQ+ professionals working behind the camera in this series after being selected via an open call hosted collaboratively by Ffotogallery and Iris at the end of last year.

You can also join us on Thursday 26 October, 6 - 9pm, for a screening of Iris Prize’s 'Best of 2023'.

Creative Cardiff is hosting a monthly gathering for artists, businesses and creative freelancers, called 'Creative Cuppa'. These informal events will bring Cardiff's creative community together for the all-important three Cs - connection, creativity and caffeine.

Exhibition: Family of Blaenafon

Running until the end of October, Blaenavon Workmen's Hall. Monday, Tuesday and Friday 10am - 1pm. Monday - Friday 6pm-8pm. Saturday 10am - 1pm.

Family of Blaenafon is a new exhibition of photographs and an accompanying book (which can be purchased directly from the artist) from the rich archive of Walter Waygood – one of Ffotogallery's contributing photographers on our Valleys Project back in the 1980s.

Public Winter Art Call Out

Wales Millennium Centre is currently inviting applications from individuals, community groups and/or community arts organisations who are Wales based to create a large-scale installation to celebrate the Winter season.

The Natural Eye Bursary

The SWLA Society of Wildlife Artists are pleased to announce that applications are now open for The Natural Eye Bursary 2023. Awards of up to £750 are available to artists submitting exceptional proposals to carry out independent projects, research or training in art practices that focus on wildlife as a main subject.
